Opportunity Description:

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Vancouver Food Runners is currently seeking volunteer drivers for our food recovery program. Vancouver Food Runners partners with food retailers—from large grocery stores to smaller, local food businesses—to immediately collect their excess food using a network of volunteer drivers who then directly distribute it to nonprofits working with the food insecure, including shelters, housing programs, and high needs schools.

DELIVERABLES/DUTIES:

Once a food “rescue” has been accepted through the Food Rescue Hero app, a volunteer food driver will be responsible for picking up the food in their vehicle and immediately delivering it to the assigned location. Once a volunteer completes three rescues, they will be invited to take our mobile food safety training quiz to keep rescuing.

Our Food Rescue Hero app (iOS and Android) provides a simple, intuitive tool for our volunteers who transport food from our food donors to our nonprofit partners. Once we have made a match between a food donation and a nonprofit who would like to receive it, the app alerts volunteers of the available “rescue.” The app guides the volunteers through the rescue, provides built-in navigation, delivery verification, and social media tools, so volunteers can easily complete their rescue and help spread the word about Vancouver Food Runners. The app also gives volunteers flexibility with their scheduling – they can sign up to volunteer next week or within the next hour!

QUALIFICATIONS:

A passion for food recovery and community engagement, along with a valid BC driver’s license and vehicle.

Adults and older teens with drivers license

MISSION:

Vancouver Food Runners is a nonprofit with a technology, logistics, and volunteer model that aims to fight hunger and promote sustainability by preventing perfectly healthy food from entering the waste stream and directly distributing it to organizations working with the food insecure. Our mission is to respond to the unfortunate disconnect between the fact that 58% of all food produced is wasted or lost while one in nine households in British Columbia are food insecure. We believe good food belongs to people, not landfills!
