Opportunity Description:

Façade Festival is a monumental public art project and cultural event that takes place every 1-2 years. In the heart of downtown Vancouver during the month of September, a group of professional artists will project imagery and video works onto the northern exterior façade of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

For the 2019 festival, BAF has commissioned 10 local professional artists to create 10 new site specific artworks that will respond to the iconic architecture of the Vancouver Art Gallery. These artworks will be projected each evening from sunset to midnight between September 8th and September 14th, 2019 on the Georgia Street façade above the newly constructed plaza.

Using the technology known as ‘projection mapping’, Burrard Arts Foundation commissions both emerging and established BC contemporary artists to create ten stunning works of art that respond to the urban environment with vibrant creativity. Each artistic projection will be mapped onto the Vancouver Art Gallery over the course of one week, to be experienced by tens of thousands of attendees.

Projection Mapping is a cutting-edge technology and art form that turns any 3- dimensional object into a dynamic projection surface, or “canvas”. This technology allows the artists to isolate each architectural element with their own captivating artistic expression to visually transform the Vancouver Art Gallery.

For the first time this year, Festival Docents will play an integral role in the festival, present onsite to educate the audience, assist visitors, and answer questions. Docents will need to be prepared to answer questions about the works shown, the artists who created them, and the festival itself. Two docents will be onsite each night from 7:30 to 10:30pm. Each volunteer will need to take at least one of these three-hour shifts, with the option to volunteer for more than one night if they would like. In addition, all volunteers will need to participate in at least one hour of training and onboarding. All volunteers will receive a free festival t-shirt.

Qualifications

Volunteers must have a strong interest in art, good verbal communication skills, and a willingness to learn in-depth about the festival and the artworks featured. Volunteers must be comfortable speaking to and educating the public about the works being projected, the artists who created them, and overall festival details.
