Opportunity Description:

Are you seeking hands on experience working one on one with a client seeking support for their wellness goals? Vancouver Coastal Health supports the philosophy that home is the best place to continue to recover from illness and injury and manage chronic or newly diagnosed health conditions. With volunteer support, our “One to One Outreach” programs (Neighbourhood Connector, Wellness Walker, Rehabilitation Support and Medical Escort volunteers) support our clients wellness goals by providing home visits (social support), wellness walks (wellness support ) and/or support clients in exercise programs in the community(rehab support). Under the direction of Vancouver Coastal Health – Home Health Staff, volunteers are paired with clients to provide companionship, motivational support and/or to explore community-based recreational programs together. Referrals to the program are customized to suit the client’s health goals. Volunteers must be available for 2 to 3 hours per week for a period of six months. Volunteers must be open to travel within Vancouver to visit client. Our outreach programs are wonderful experience for future healthcare workers (interested in supporting adults and/or older adults) in various fields of study such as Nursing, Social Work, Gerontology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Language Pathology and Recreation Therapy. Currently seeking volunteers who can speak the following languages such as – CANTONESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH, HINDI, ITALIAN, MANDARIN, PORTUGUESE, PUNJABI & VIETNAMESE. If interested, please contact Katharine at 604-301-3883 or email katharine.proudlove@vch.ca Skills & Experience Must be 19+ years of age or older (Mature and reliable) Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident Must be comfortable engaging adult clients one to one (at home or in the community at large) Must be comfortable engaging adult clients with a diversity of disabilities or disabling conditions Willing to research local amenities and or resources relevant to client’s needs Good listening and strong interpersonal skills (social skills) Patient, respectful, understanding and compassionate Ability to set clear boundaries and adhere to VCH volunteer policies Competency in English Second language an asset Benefits & Recognition Gain hands on experience while supporting VCH client services Orientation to VCH Volunteer Guidelines and outreach training provided Increased knowledge of the operations of community healthcare Reference letter and recognition Deliverables / Duties Plans and completes weekly visits and/or outings with client Provides information about community supports, services and events Accompany and introduce client to local events or groups of interest Share mutually enjoyable activities such as neighbourhood walks, crafts and games Report progress regularly to VCH Coordinator – Volunteer Resources as well as periodic check-ins with VCH Home Health Staff involved in clients care (via email or phone) Report any challenges or concerns to VCH Coordinator – Volunteer Resources Volunteers are required to “Log” activity hours after each visit with client Other Requirements Screening Interview with Volunteer Resources Must successfully complete a Criminal Record Check (To be processed after interview) Must provide two professional references (not friends or family) To apply for role go to www.myvolunteerpage.com More questions?
