Science World British Columbia is seeking energetic volunteers to support our exclusive signature fundraising event, Science of Cocktails on Thursday, April 27th 2023 from 6pm- Midnight. Volunteers will be supporting an important fundraiser as proceeds from this event will go towards providing field trips to Science World for students from under-served schools in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. We expect attendance to be around 1,500 guests.

There are a number of volunteer roles for this evening:

Position Descriptions:

Bar/H2O Assistant (Busser): Enthusiastic and ready to help! Assist some of the famous bartenders from some of the best bars and restaurants in Vancouver. There will be 25-30 bars at this event and with that – several bar assistants will be needed to move ice and dispose of cups left behind by guests in and around the bar. You may also be enlisted to help keep our guests hydrated at water stations located throughout the building.

Onsite Fundraising: Energy and enthusiasm to spare? Interact with our guests and get them excited about Science World’s mission and raising funds for kids through the sale of 50-50 tickets. You will be responsible for processing electronic payments via an payment device or similar technology, so experience in this realm will be beneficial, however training will be provided at orientation.

Coat Check: You will be expected to bring great energy and greet all guests with excellent customer service. You will be in charge of collecting and retrieving any goods (i.e. umbrella’s, coats or bags) that guests would like to drop off while they are at the event.  This role is responsible for supervising checked items as well as making sure that items are properly numbered to ensure all guests receive back the items checked.

Event Ambassadors: In this front-line position, you will be expected to greet all guests with excellent customer service. This role is responsible for a variety of tasks: managing the flow of incoming attendees and monitoring the front door area; monitoring in a specific zones, removing and disposing of napkins, plates, glasses, or other garbage that you see on surfaces or on the ground throughout Science World, and place in appropriate garbage bins (paper, recycling, and organic waste), directing attendees, and providing support where needed. This position involves interacting with event coordinators, attendees, and volunteers.

“Fun Times” Exhibitor: Lead guests through fun cocktail related activities with a playful science spin.  Must be comfortable interacting with many people and helping build excitement for the activities you are leading, which may include:

Free pour – Can you pour as accurately as a professional bartender with no measurements to guide you?
Jellybean roulette – Explore the connection between taste and smell with a variety of pleasant and (for the daring) extremely unpleasant jellybean flavors.
Cocktail Shaker Challenge – See if you have the strength and speed to be a professional bartender using sensor technology to track how fast you can accelerate a classic cocktail shaker.
Bar bets – Learn to torment friends and loved ones with a little math and a little physics in these games you can’t lose.

Tablecloth tower – Explore Friction and Inertia as you try to whisk a tablecloth out from under a tower of metal cocktail glasses.

Training will be provided at the orientation evening.  No serving or consuming of alcohol involved.
