Opportunity Description:

Position type: Volunteer, 4 hours/week Start and end date: Sept 1 – Dec 31, 2016, with option to continue Deadline for application: Open Location: Vancouver, British Columbia Language Partners BC is a volunteer-run umbrella organization supporting one-to-one language exchange programs in Vancouver. We bring together adults from different language backgrounds and provide infrastructure for them to learn languages together and build relationships. Many of the English learners are new immigrants or refugees, and our programs are focused on supporting these newcomers in conversation and settlement. We value diversity, equality, peace, camaraderie, fun, and open-mindedness. We are also serious about assessing our work, refining our programs, and growing to support more people. After a successful pilot program in April-June 2016 for Arabic and English speaking women (highlighted in a Vancouver Sun editorial), we aim to offer 3 language exchange programs this fall: Arabic-English for Women, Arabic-English for Men, and Turkish-English Mixed. The long-term goal is to support dozens of diverse language exchange programs across the province. We are currently adding people to our organization. Now is a great time to join and be part of a fun and motivated team. We are looking for a Social Media Coordinator to lead in promoting the organization and managing the communities of followers and supporters on social media. Primary Responsibilities: Post regularly on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, with original content, updates, and related content. Respond consistently to comments, questions, and messages from followers and community members. Develop, propose, and execute your own creative ideas for social media campaigns. Represent Language Partners BC on social media channels. Work with the Social Media Coordinator to synchronize our online presence and optimize the website to appear in Google and other searches. Report on progress and troubleshoot challenges in biweekly meeting with the Director. Meet as needed with the Website & Database Guru. Participate in monthly core team meetings (in person or by video) with Director, Fundraising Coordinator, UBC Liaison, and Website & Database Coordinator. Desired Qualifications: Experience in managing social media accounts for a similar group, organization, or issue. Passion for community building. Technical proficiency in social media channels. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in or desire to learn Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish, or Armenian would be an asset. Genuine curiosity and enjoyment of people. Support: You will be introduced to the methodology of tandem language learning and introduced to the core team members and participants in the programs. You will be given admin access to all of our documents, our database, and our existing social media accounts (you will need to create most!) You will have a biweekly check-in with the Director of LPBC. You will receive peer support in monthly meetings with the other core team members. Salary: This is a volunteer position (4 hours/week, 4 month contract with option to continue). However, if we are successful in receiving funding, we will seek to pay our core team members, including you. If you’re interested in this position and meet the requirements, please e-mail a resume and brief cover letter describing why you’d like to work with us and why you’re the right person for the job to Mary Leighton at mary.f.leighton@gmail.com. Interviews will happen on a rolling basis, so please apply as soon as possible. When submitting your application please name and save your attachments with your first and last name in the title, such as: “Ann_Smith_Cover_Letter.pdf” and “Ann_Smith_Resume.pdf.” Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for interviews. No phone calls please.
