Opportunity Description:

The Surrey Seed Library is a community run project. We need volunteers: to communicate about the project at community events and farmers markets; to host the seed library the first Saturday of every month; and to help develop community programming and effective seed sharing systems. The Surrey Seed Library offers free access to seeds and seed saving education. The Seed Library is for everyone! Our goal is to support new and experienced gardeners alike. By providing seeds and education we will reduce the barriers to gardening and encourage more people to grow food, flowers and herbs at home. By supporting local seed sharing and education, we will help introduce more people to the importance of locally grown seed. The seed library will launch in March of 2015 and will be open one Saturday per month in the Surrey Libraries’ Ocean Park Branch. We will be hosting events starting in February. We are committed to ensuring open, inclusive access to all programming. Each year members are entitled to sign out up to 6 different varieties of seed. We only share open pollinated and relatively self-fertile varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs. This makes seed saving easy, reducing concerns associated with species crossing and the genetic integrity of our collection. The Surrey Seed Library will be hosted at the Ocean Park Branch of the Surrey Libraries. Members of the Surrey Seed Library can check out and return seed the first Saturday of every month from 10-2. We will also provide additional opportunities to sign out seed during the spring planting season, during workshops and events.
