Opportunity Description:

Thank you for your interest in VAHMS! We are currently looking for the right individual to take on the leadership of our Board of Directors as Board Chair. All submissions will be reviewed by our Board Nominations Committee and prospective candidates will be contacted for an interview. The successful candidate will be officially confirmed at our AGM in January 2022. You may wish to learn more about our mandate and history before submitting, and you can do so, here.

All VAHMS board positions are on a volunteer basis and if elected, your term will be for two years with the possibility re-election for consecutive terms.

VAHMS values the contributions that individuals who identify as members of marginalized communities bring to our organization. We encourage Indigenous people, people of colour, people with disabilities, people identifying as LGBTQI+, and newcomers to apply. We also understand that applicants may experience a number of these identities simultaneously in ways that reinforce and nuance their experience. We are committed to creating an organization as diverse as the communities we serve.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Chair of the Board shall, if present, preside at all meetings of the Board, act as a liaison between the Board and the Executive Director to help ensure the Board’s directives and resolutions are carried out, and exercise and perform such other powers and duties as may be from time to time prescribed by the Board. The Chair of the Board shall be responsible for:

Leading the Board and Executive Director to carry out its governance functions
Ensuring the Board has approved policies to help ensure sound and compliant governance and management of the organization
Assessing the performance of the Board and its committees
Assuring ongoing recruitment, development, and contributions of Board members
Working with the Executive Director to ensure the Board’s directives, policies, and resolutions are carried out
Working with the Fundraising Committee in cultivating and soliciting major foundation grants and individual gifts
Coordinating an annual performance review of the Executive Director
Setting priorities and creating agendas for meetings of the Board and Executive Director
Presiding over meetings of the Board and Executive Director
Serving as an ambassador of the organization and advocating its mission to internal and external stakeholders
