The DTES Neighbourhood House is looking for 1-2 volunteers to take on a special project at our Urban Farm. The volunteer will need to be available consistently on Tuesday mornings and needs to have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle (on Tuesdays).
About the Project: An incredibly dedicated volunteer who helped us start the farm last year, has started the Viola Fundraiser project all on their own. They normally take care of 100% of the responsibilities for this project but are looking to train someone to share the workload. We grow lots of violas at the farm which are edible flowers. The Fairmont hotel restaurant orders violas from us every week because they use them in their cocktails. 100% of the money raised from this project goes back into the urban farm. The urban farm is an incredibly important initiative that allows the DTES Neighbourhood House to grow organic produce for the meals we serve to our neighbours. A lot of the produce also goes directly to DTES residents. The urban farm is becoming a space for community-building, celebration, and education. We hold Community Drop-In and Family Drop-In programs at the farm to share knowledge about growing food. Other organizations including WISH, DEWC, Hives for Humanity, and the Dudes Club also use the farm for their own programs and projects.
Volunteer Duties: The volunteer will be trained on everything they need to know to be able to do the work for this project by themselves.
- Communicate with the project lead via email & phone
- Pick violas (urban farm located at Hawks & Hastings next to Astoria Hotel)
- Count & process the violas (rinse & get them ready to be transported)
- Drive the order to the Fairmont hotel before 1:30pm, provide invoice & purchase order when dropping off
- Dead heading, keeping track of growing, propagation
- Be able to be at the farm carrying out duties rain or shine
The whole process of picking the violas and delivering them can be done in one morning. However some of the maintenance duties like propagation can be done at other times depending on your schedule. Our violas grow year round, so there is not a set end date for this project. We are looking for someone who can commit for at least 2 months. It takes time to train people, so please only inquire if you are certain that you have the capacity to take on this project. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please email email@example.com and tell us about yourself, your availability, and confirm that you have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle.
Why Volunteer for this Position? The urban farm is a special place to spend time. This is a great opportunity to get some fresh air, maybe learn some gardening skills, work with your hands, give back to your community, meet new people (other volunteers and community members at the farm), and get involved with the DTESNH by helping us with this fundraising project! The DTESNH values our volunteers greatly. We provide an orientation, volunteer resources and have some fun events and workshops that volunteers can be a part of! We’re happy to provide references/letters of recommendation for our volunteers as well.
