Position Description

On the afternoon of April 27th 2024 ImmUnity Canada is holding a fundraising Walk for Immunodeficiency (this is genetically low immunity, where part of the immune system is missing or not functioning correctly) in central Vancouver.   This will correspond with an educational symposium for our members, who we will encourage to come on the walk.

Organizing a charity walk takes a lot of work, and we really want this to be a fun, memorable event for everyone involved.  Volunteers will help to create a positive atmosphere for people undertaking the walk, and make a valuable contribution to our new mission to empower people with immunodeficiency.

Working as Walk for Immunodeficiency leader, you could be:

Meeting and conversing with ImmUnity Canada staff, volunteers and members over Zoom and in-person
Collaboratively devising and scoping a route for the walk, deciding on the positioning of walk volunteers at 1km stops along the route.
Assisting the Programs Manager to obtain permission for the walk from the local municipality
Working with ImmUnity Canada staff to organize and advertise the walk
Using your communication skills to answer questions about the walk route
Directing participants to the start of the walk
Supervising and leading volunteer way finders to their positions along the walk route
Using your initiative to trouble-shoot any arising issues

Experience, skills, qualities and equipment needed

As this is a pivotal supervisory role, you should be able to complete these tasks with ease, you should:

Be over 21 years of age
Have excellent verbal communication skills
Be reliable, dependable and able to maintain confidentiality
Be able use your initiative
Have sound problem-solving skills
Be positive, friendly, sociable, compassionate and outgoing
Have previous supervisory experience or the desire to gain some

Onboarding/Training Provided

As a new volunteer, you will undergo a volunteer orientation, and receive a PDF of the ImmUnity Canada volunteer handbook, which contains some useful information about ImmUnity Canada, our policies and your rights and responsibilities.  You will be supported throughout the process by both the Project and Volunteer Coordinator and Programs Manager.

Benefits to you as a Volunteer

This is an opportunity to get behind the scenes in the running of a charity walk, meet some interesting people, try out different roles and help support people in the rare disease community.  You will also get an opportunity to work with seasoned volunteers and staff within the organization, and learn from them.

At ImmUnity Canada, we gain a great deal from the work of our volunteers and hope that you will feel appreciated.  We offer a personal reference and certificate of appreciation to all event volunteers, as well as refreshments on the day.

We also hope that the experience will benefit you in the following ways:

Increase your confidence and verbal communication skills
Enable you to recognise, explore and shape your leadership skills
