Opportunity Description:

Seeking able-bodied volunteers to help make a mostly vegetarian dinner from scratch for residents of GPC pearsonresidents.org using local harvests from the Farmers on 57th project farmerson57th.ca

Volunteers should have at least basic food prep and cooking skills – we provide recipes and instructions but you should know how to chop an onion, grate cheese, etc. It’s also important that you have a patient, friendly attitude and willingness to work as a team. Seeking people who can volunteer for minimum of 6 months.

Event happens on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 3-7pm. Some portion of this time can be ok too if you have to come late or leave early.

This monthly Community Kitchen is run out of a residential facility where people with disabilities live long term (note this includes adults of all ages, not just seniors).

At a typical gathering, we start by prepping the kitchen, cleaning the harvested vegetables, chop, mix, bake and cook a big dinner. Then we all sit down at one big table and eat together – volunteers are welcome to eat but it is optional. If you are willing to help serve the food, that’s extra great. All training provided. And of course, there’s clean up. We have access to an older kitchen with some limitations, so if you are looking for a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen scene, this isn’t it!

We aim to be spontaneous and creative, to counterbalance the rigid schedules that come with living in an institution. This is a great opportunity for students in dietetics, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy etc.

The regular meals served at this facility come on hospital style trays and are chosen weeks in advance. There is no chance for seconds of something you particularly liked. We aim to create a meal that is more homelike and made from fresh whole foods.

Our main goals at Community Kitchen are:
1) to provide some aspects of the normal activity of making dinner to the residents of long term care – smell it cooking, and eat in a social family-style setting.
2) to enable residents to have choices — eg. more of that carrot soup, yes to pasta but light on the sauce, or maybe you’d like some fresh ground pepper?

Come be a part of our fun and unique community kitchen! We make great food that is much appreciated by people living in a care facility and we have fun while doing it.

Please email with a bit about yourself. Thanks!
