Want to support positive change locally and abroad? Love great independent films? Looking for a way to do both while working with a dynamic, exciting team of like-minded folks? Then becoming a Reel Causes board member might be just the “ticket”! Reel Causes screens critically acclaimed independent films that engage and inspire audiences to take action on health, environmental and social justice concerns, while raising awareness of — and helping support — Canadian non-profit organizations and independent professional filmmakers working to address these issues. Reel Causes is a volunteer-based non-profit with a working + governance board. As such, directors are involved in the organization’s day-to-day operations, as well as governance and strategic planning. The actual duties of the board members will vary depending on the applicants’ skills and interests. At this time we’re especially looking to recruit board members with a strong background in (a) Public Relations or (b) Marketing and Media (including social media) to take active leads in these area of our programming. If Marketing/Media or Public Relations are not your strong suits but you have other skills that you’d like to contribute to our dynamic organization, please feel free to apply! Qualifications Reel Causes directors are highly collaborative, inclusive team players.They enjoy working both at the “grass roots” level of running the day-to-day operations of an innovative non-profit, and are also able to think strategically and see the big picture to take Reel Causes to the next level. Ideally, you have previous non-profit board experience, but this is not a strict requirement of the board positions. What IS essential is the willingness and ability to be self-directed, take initiative, and roll up your sleeves to get whatever needs to be done, done. A flexible, “can do” outlook and a sense of humour are highly valued. Benefits & Recognition Benefits: Access/VIP invitations to select film screenings, film festivals and cultural events in/around Vancouver. Access to a wide range of Vancouver-based non-profit organizations. The opportunity to develop/build on professional skills and experience. Deliverables / Duties Marketing and Media board member – will take the lead in developing and updating content for the Reel Causes’ website and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, MeetUp). Develop and send out e-blasts for events. Oversee development of community outreach and guest lists for events, and communicate with outreach partners regarding Reel Causes’ events. Plan, write and oversee design/redesign of printed materials such as brochures and posters. Work closely with the Public Relations board member lead to assist promoting Reel Causes/Reel Causes events in traditional media (TV, print, radio.) Public Relations board member – will take the lead in generating stories and press releases to be distributed to our media contacts regarding Reel Causes, our events, and the issues/non-profit organizations/filmmakers with which we are working. Send out press releases to list contacts. Conduct follow-up calls to media outlets and handle any incoming media requests. Update and maintain media lists (including events listings). Work closely with the Marketing and Media board member lead to assist promoting Reel Causes and Reel Causes event on our social media platforms. Other Requirements As Reel Causes board members are responsible for actually running the organization, each board member is expected to contribute a minimum of 5 hours per week. Board terms are for one year, renewable. Hours are flexible, but board members must be available for evening board meetings (held once a month, except December, July and August) and events (around 5 per year.) As there will be travel within the Vancouver area, a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are assets, but not required.
