As a volunteer in this program you work on Vancouver Police and City of Vancouver initiatives to address lower level crime, safety, and disorder concerns in the community. Duties include:
– Walking or riding a bicycle through the community.
– Providing visible presence (“eyes and ears”) in the community and facilitating support from law enforcement personnel for residents, visitors, and business people requesting immediate assistance.
– Conducting safety assessments on vehicles and buildings and distributing crime prevention information.
– Observing and reporting all suspicious/criminal activities witnessed in the community and all suspicious/criminal activity conveyed by the public.
– Locating and reporting incidents of auto crime, including theft from automobiles and stolen automobiles.
– Monitoring and reporting driving infractions and other traffic related issues.
– Observing and reporting civic infractions, including graffiti, vandalism, illegal dumping, garbage overflow, unsafe conditions and property maintenance issues.
– Providing aid to persons in trouble when advised to do so by 9-1-1 operators or other emergency personnel.
– Interacting and building good relations with the public, when required.
– Educating the public on current crime trends, crime prevention strategies, and opportunities to become actively involved in crime prevention as guided by the CPC/VPD through distribution of crime alerts/prevention information.
– Promoting CPC/VPD services including Speed Watch, Driving Behaviour Audits, CPTED Audits and Safer Parking Initiative to the public.
– Identifying people who may need short or long-term assistance and utilizing available means of support to link those individuals with local resources, as currently done in accordance with WECHCPC practices.
– Providing referral information to help those in need of accessing support (e.g., homeless, vulnerable) and reporting to VPD and/or local community agencies, as currently done in accordance with WECHCPC practices.
