Impact of the Role
The Stroke Recovery Program supports stroke survivors find their way after stroke. The Program Assistant plays an active role in engaging with participates to gain the most from the program. The purpose of the program is to provide stroke survivors the opportunity to connect with other stroke survivors in the community and enjoy social interaction and peer support. The Program Assistant will have a direct role in supporting those with communication disabilities to actively engage in program activities.
Tasks and Responsibilities
· Actively participate in bi-weekly in-person program sessions
· Support Program Instructor with the delivery of activities
· Provide participants with community resources to enhance engagement
· Complete room set up and clean up before and after session
· Utilize a variety of supportive communication strategies that support participants with communication challenges to participate fully in program activities
· Adhere to COVID protocols and requirements for group environments
· Respect others’ privacy, wishes, values, rights and beliefs
· Record and report volunteer hours on a monthly basis
· Adhere to all MODC policies, procedures and guidelines

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
· 19 years of age or older
- Lived experience as a stroke survivor, caregiver, or someone with knowledge of/experience with individuals affected by stroke and communication disabilities
· Ability to take initiative
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to take and give verbal and/or written direction and follow through to complete assigned tasks
- Reliable, understanding, collaborative and respectful
- Team-oriented, personable
- Prior volunteer experience an asset
