Feast Your Eyes – traditional meal and fashion show celebrates National Aboriginal Day

Vancouver, BC

The Elders Council of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre takes a leadership role at the intersection of women’s, Aboriginal and social inequality issues. This innovative approach uses diverse strategies to address issues of safety and security for Aboriginal women in our community. This includes culturally relevant processes, community building, sharing of knowledge, focus on spirituality and leadership from women. This program provides counseling and emotional support to women around multiple issues including residential school, substance use, cultural isolation and violence.

The Elders Council will host FEAST YOUR EYES on the eve of National Aboriginal Day to help fund their trip to the 2014 BC Elders Gathering in Penticton, BC. The evening will feature a traditional Aboriginal feast, a fashion show of wearable art created by women of the centre from donated materials, and a silent auction.

Tickets for the Aboriginal feast are $25 and the seating, from 5-6 pm, is limited. At 6:30 pm, doors will open to the public for free admission to the fashion show and auction. For further information or tickets for the feast, please contact Chrystal Sparrow, 604-681-8480, ext. 244 or at CACoordinator@dewc.ca. The event will be held at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, 302 Columbia Street (corner of Cordova), Friday, June 20. Feast at 5:30 pm (ticketed patrons only welcome at 5 pm), fashion show at 7 pm, auction at 8 pm. Join us for FEAST YOUR EYES.Donations are gratefully accepted.

You nourish your soul by fulfilling your destiny, by developing the potential that the soul represents. When you fulfill your soul’s destiny, you will feel “right.” Conversely, when you ignore your soul’s destiny, when you get caught up in your own self-interests and forget to care for others, you will not feel “right.” Instead, you will feel empty and unfulfilled. During these times, you are neglecting your soul–you are depriving it of nourishment. When I talk to people who feel this emptiness and lack of fulfillment, I recommend they find a source of balance in their lives. I suggest they find a way to “give back” to the world in order to feel a sense of completeness.
