Founded in 1969, the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) is a non-profit charitable organization that provides practical solutions for urban sustainability. Areas of work include local food security, zero waste, renewable energy and climate action. Farm-to-Plate Marketplace is one of the many food security initiatives that SPEC supports. Farm-to-Plate is a virtual marketplace that provides consumers of all income levels with direct access to fresh, local produce through online ordering and weekly pick-ups. It is designed to directly connect farmers and community members in a way that is manageable for both parties. The program started in November 2020 at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House and has now expanded to include Jewish Family Services, each of whom run a virtual farmer’s marketplace. As many people are food insecure the program uses a pay-what-you-can model with a subsidy option so that locally grown food can be accessible to all income levels.

Ruby Slippers Theatre’s vision is a world where diversity is celebrated through a deeper understanding of each other. To bring this vision to reality, RST illuminates under-represented perspectives and inspires independent critical thought by giving voice to diverse, female-identifying artists and by premiering significant Québec works in English translation on the West Coast.

Employ to Empower (ETE) supports residents in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) community by providing access to development and entrepreneurial resources. Our resources include affordable microloans and business mentorship, with the goal of having a long-term impact on our members’ personal and economic well-being. We also actively advocate for creating positive social change in the DTES.

The Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society is a registered secular non-profit organization with year-round programming in the arts and culture scene. Our mission is to foster, promote and celebrate the arts and cultural diversity that Asian-Canadian communities bring to Canadian society. Since 1996, VAHMS has worked closely with local Asian-Canadian communities and organizations that support our vision of becoming the main hub for celebrating Asian-Canadian arts and culture in the Metro-Vancouver area. Our signature project is explorASIAN, a Metro-Vancouver festival showcasing pan-Asian Canadian arts and culture during Asian Heritage Month in May. This year (2021) is the 25th anniversary of both VAHMS and explorASIAN.

Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) is a long-standing, award-winning not-for-profit that serves the most vulnerable people in the Province of B.C. The Pathways to Education program takes a holistic approach to address the challenges students face. There are four components to the Pathways to Education program, which are tutoring, mentoring, immediate financial supports, and one-on-one support. We look to support each student broadly through the 4 supports and at the same time, shift the way we work with each student based on their individual needs. We support students with challenges they face individually, at school, and in the community by working together with the families, the schools, and other community-based organizations.

The mandate of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House is to provide programming and educational, leadership, social and recreational opportunities to residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Our vision is to provide a dignified welcoming space that creates and supports an improved quality of life for the DTES community. Our mission is to provide opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with and contribute to their community in an equitable atmosphere of sharing and learning. The secular, grassroots Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTES NH) embraces people of all ancestries, genders, ages and descriptions; annually welcoming almost 9,000 DTES residents in a community where 70% of our neighbours have low‐incomes, 700 are homeless and 5,000 are under-housed. Our programming is community inspired and varied, a sampling of which has included a Chinese Elders Community Kitchen, Traditional Aboriginal Community Kitchen, Leadership Development, a Children’s Community Kitchen, Nutritional Outreach Activities (Mobile Smoothie Project and Banana Beat), The Healing Circle, Father’s for Thought, Table Talks project, Family Drop In: Families, Farming and Food, Community Drop-in and the production of a Right to Food Zine. Those who built the DTES NH put the Right to Food at the heart of our work, as nutritional vulnerability was a theme familiar to all. Our goal around the Right to Food is to reform the nutritional impact, quality, abundance and delivery of food in the DTES in consultation with residents, community food providers, non‐food community organizations, healthcare professionals, policy makers, growers/suppliers, food/beverage industry professionals and researchers.

The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society (dba Dragon Boat BC) is the non-profit producer of North America’s flagship dragon boat festival, the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival. This year, the Festival will feature a reimagined program celebrating our community, its cultures, and the spirit of competition. The Society also produces a series of races, cultural programming, and community initiatives centred around the traditional Chinese sport of dragon boat. Through our All Access and youth programs, supported by the Milton K. Wong Legacy Project, the Society makes paddling experiences accessible regardless of any barriers to participation.
