From June to October, the multi-vendor Saturday market is a bustling trading post in need of helping hands. Market Crew members are in charge of setting up the market stands, selling produce and generally running our markets throughout the growing season, including our smaller markets on Tuesday evenings at the farm and Wednesdays on UBC campus. Outreach volunteers sell merchandise such as Friend of the Farm t-shirts and talk to guests about our many programs at Saturday markets and festivals and events in the community. If you like talking to people and are enthusiastic about food and farms, this is a great way for you to get involved! Weekends, on-campus fairs, and community events add extra fun to these positions, while helping people learn about the UBC Farm and connect to their food and community. Friendly faces at festivals and events may be your way to have fun and help out! The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS), located at UBC Farm, is a unique research centre that aims to understand and fundamentally transform local and global food systems towards a more sustainable, food-secure future. The centre is a living laboratory, committed to finding solutions to both the local and global challenges facing food systems sustainability and translating solutions to improve personal, community, and environmental health. Much of the great work that happens at the UBC Farm is made possible by the continued support of the farm’s dedicated volunteers. Most volunteer opportunities are available during the main growing season (May-October). New volunteers are required to attend a general farm orientation before signing up for volunteer shifts, both of which are available on our online volunteer portal here (https://secure.landfood.ubc.ca/farmvol/new/application/mi-login.php). You can find more information about all of our volunteer opportunities on our website (http://ubcfarm.ubc.ca/community/volunteer-program/).
