About the program: The Hastings-Sunrise Better at home program is an initiative designed to help seniors live independently at home longer by providing non-medical, home support services like grocery shopping. This program serves seniors living in East Vancouver, within the Hastings-Sunrise community (PNE surroundings): East of Nanaimo St. West of Boundary Rd. North of East Broadway All services are delivered in that area of East Vancouver Weekly Grocery Shopping Services: Provided once a week on Fridays. Seniors are provided door-to-door transportation services from their home to their preferred store. Volunteer Job Description: Duties: Grocery Assistant Volunteer supports the driver and participating seniors during operation of the service every Friday. Activities: Assisting seniors entering and exiting vehicle. For example, fetching and unfolding walkers or wheelchairs Help seniors with mobility difficulties move around the store, such us getting a grocery cart for them or pushing their wheelchair Grabbing desired items off shelves and into senior’s cart Helping senior put item through the check out Packing/ bagging purchased items When necessary, assist seniors and driver placing items in vehicle or taking them out When necessary, help senior putting away and organizing groceries at home If possible, provide translation/interpretation when senior does not speak English Report concerns about senior to coordinator and driver Time Commitment: Fridays from 9:30AM to 2:30PM *May finish earlier depending on number of clients Minimum 3 month commitment to volunteer position Attributes, Skills & Experience: Personable and outgoing Empathetic and patient Reliable and punctual when participating in the service Genuine interest and enjoyment in spending time with older adults Knowledge of challenges and issues associated with aging an asset Previous experience with seniors and/or operating mobility devices (walkers/wheelchairs) an asset Respect client confidentiality and volunteer-client relationship boundaries Confident in one-to-one situations Good command of the English language Second language an asset: Cantonese, Korean, Italian, etc.
