Burrard Arts Foundation is guided by an exciting vision – for Vancouver to be recognized, locally and globally, as a thriving center for visual art. Through special projects that foster creativity in the public realm, and by supporting the talented artists who call our city home, we promote excellence in contemporary art in Canada.

All of Burrard Arts Foundation projects and programming are designed to connect with the broadest possible cross-section of the Vancouver community, prioritizing at every turn a low-barrier, inclusive mode of arts presentation with a special focus on professional development for early-career artists.

Public art projects are one of the primary ways that Burrard Arts Foundation pursues this mission. Past projects have included murals, sculpture, and interactive installation. Façade Festival, BAF’s most ambitious public art project, commissions ten local artists to produce original, projection-mapped video artworks that are displayed over the entire Vancouver Art Gallery northern façade nightly for one week. This large-scale, immersive celebration of contemporary art and technology is BAF’s most ambitious public art project. Completely free and open to the public, Façade Festival occurs once every two years.

Our studio and exhibition space, BAF Gallery, is designed around a central pillar of BAF’s activities: the Residency Program. The majority of BAF Gallery exhibitions are produced by our Resident Artists, in a space that aims to be welcoming and accessible to everyone. Throughout the Residency process, the public is engaged through free events such as gallery tours and our Insight video series. Another facet of BAF Gallery programming is The Garage, a street-facing, glass-fronted exhibition space. Work installed in The Garage is visible to passersby from the street at all times and is programmed through an open call for proposals to local artists.

Burrard Arts Foundation is a nonprofit organization and a registered Canadian charity.

To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children, to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived–that is to have succeeded.
