The Bicycle Valet is a social enterprise run by the non-profit charitable organization, Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST). Our goal is to eliminate barriers to sustainable transportation, in this case by providing a safe place for people to keep their bicycles (and bicycle accessories).
This summer we're partnering with the Vancouver Police Department and Project 529 at Granville Island to try out a new project, attacking bike theft from as many different angles as possible. We'll have our valet open 7 days/week, be educating the public on best locking practices, registering bikes with Project 529, collecting data on current locking practices, as well as conducting a survey looking at transportation choices made by all people traveling to Granville Island.
Free Geek is a nonprofit community organization that reduces the environmental impact of waste electronics by reusing and recycling donated technology. Through community engagement we provide education, job skills training, Internet access and free or low cost computers to the public.
The Professional BC Wedding Awards is the longest running wedding industry Awards program in Canada. We are an independent, unbiased and dedicated to finding and awarding the best of British Columbia's dynamic and creative wedding industry. These awards recognize some of the amazing creative talent, companies and individuals that make up British Columbia's wedding professionals.
The Mount Pleasant BIA (Business Improvement Area) is a non-profit community based organization that focuses on improving and growing the neighbourhood in a healthy economic, cultural and sustainable way. We are the second oldest of the 22 BIA's in the City of Vancouver, who represent the major commercial areas of the City. Operated under the auspices of the City of Vancouver, we represent approximately 400 businesses in the Main Street area as well as about 120 property owners. Our mandate is to create and enhanced business environment through marketing and promotions, special events such as street festivals, street beautification, working with local organizations and groups and addressing specific concerns of our membership such as fair commercial taxes.
VIBC produces a wide-range of events with the objective of increasing community engagement, artistic innovation and education. Through the joy of bhangra, we help build bridges and find inroads to establish new relationships across genres of performance and ethno-cultural boundaries.
VIBC accomplishes this by producing the 10-day City of Bhangra Festival in unique venues across Vancouver and Surrey, and by producing meaningful events throughout the year. We engage with communities, organizations, and artists year-round to help spread the art of bhangra.
Roedde House Museum, in Vancouver's West End, is a late-Victorian Heritage house museum in the Queen Anne revival style. Built in 1893 for the family of Gustav Roedde, the city's first printer and bookbinder, it has been faithfully restored to reflect the day-to-day life of a middle class, immigrant family at the turn of the last century.
Since the Museum’s official opening in May of 1990, the Roedde House Preservation Society has run Roedde House as a threefold facility:
∙ A museum with guided tours, including an active schools program,
∙ A venue for music and other entertainment,
∙ A rental facility for small receptions.
The Vancouver Art Gallery is a not-for-profit organization supported by its members, individual donors, corporate funders, foundations,
the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia through the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
We’re reaching out to 27,000 British Columbia seniors and their families to get first-hand feedback on the quality of their residential care and accommodations.
The results from this survey will give residents and their families a voice. They will provide a road map for improvement of the quality of care and services provided to residents and their families in residential care.
This project is being led by the BC Office of the Seniors Advocate, an independent office of the provincial government. The project is being managed by the BC Patient Centred Measurement Working Group and Providence Health Care. The project has been informed by the BC Office of the Seniors Advocate’s Long-Term Care Consultation Group.
The project is working in partnership with all health authority owned and operated sites, as well as all contracted sites (private-for-profit and private not-for-profit).
The project is working with a survey vendor, the National Research Corporation of Canada, to collect and collate the resident and most frequent visitor survey data.
The interviews are volunteer-powered, with over 900 volunteers needed contributing their time and effort across BC.
History
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank was set up as a temporary relief to the hunger crisis in 1983 and has grown significantly in the four decades since then.
Today the GVFB sees over 800,000 visits from clients annually across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore.
Who We Support
52% of the food distributed by the GVFB goes to individuals in four locations across our catchment area: Vancouver (57%), Burnaby (25%), New Westminster (9%), and the North Shore (8%). Of these clients 31% are children and 15% are seniors. The remaining 48% of the food distributed goes to our network of Agency Partners. These partners use GVFB food to fuel their food programs, including small community food banks, daily snack and meal programs for shelters and community housing, school nutrition programs, and more.
The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is a unique, community-based celebration of the finest in contemporary and traditional folk and roots music from around the world. It is an event that connects generations of families, groups of friends, and community members who come to enjoy the music, dance, food, children’s activities, and the very special ambiance of Jericho Beach, one of Vancouver’s sea-side jewels. There are 7 stages, over 300 musicians, 1500+ volunteers and 35000 guests that help make it successful every single one of it's 39 years.
With 10 large-scale events being operated across Canada this year, Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is one of Canada’s Largest Street Tournaments and Hockey Festivals. The event represents a unique and true celebration of both Canadian culture and sport and allows adults and kids to channel their inner NHL superstar!
This year, we are thrilled to bring Play On! Vancouver (www.playon.ca/events/vancouver) to its new home at the YPK Integrated Training Centre in Pitt Meadows on June 25-26, 2016.
Portobello West fashion and art market is a monthly market held in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Market is a regular monthly event from March to December at which local designers and artisans can sell their creations directly to the public. It was established in August 2006 by Carlie Smith, a graduate of the University of Victoria who, after living in London, England for two years, wanted to bring the European style market atmosphere to her home town. Carlie envisioned a regular event that would raise the profile of local designers and artisans as well as be a regular outdoor community event.
