A unique residency model gives artists a chance to advance their practice while volunteering their time in downtown Prince George, in northern British Columbia. The goal, according to program curator Justin Langlois, is to offer artists, who may have a socially conscious practice, an opportunity to apply their skills to directly help the community.

Are you feeling stressed/overwhelmed/exhausted by all the demands on your time? Psychiatrist and author Dr. Shimi Kang is willing to write you a prescription: volunteer. “We are hardwired to give and not just be consumers,” she told the Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland luncheon on Thursday.

Purple basketball nets are popping up across the city. It’s part of the Purple Net Project, an initiative by Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver that aims to show the need for volunteers. The organization, which pairs young boys with an older male role model, is looking for 23 Big Brothers and 50 in-school mentors from Burnaby.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As excitement for March Madness continues to ramp up, purple basketball nets are popping up in parks across Metro Vancouver to raise awareness for the Big Brothers. The group has put up more than 100 nets on bare hoops to symbolize the number of volunteers they need.

North Shore Rescue volunteers spend countless hours helping those in need in B.C., and now one member in particular is about to embark on a unique mission to help others in Haiti. North Vancouver resident Kayla Brolly is an emergency room nurse, NSR crew member, and volunteer with the Canadian non-profit Broken Earth. On Monday night she will be heading to Haiti with the charity’s Lower Mainland branch, comprised of medical professionals offering care to those who need it the most.
