Walk of Hope (Ovarian Cancer Canada)

The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is the single most powerful awareness and fundraising initiative in Canada dedicated to overcoming ovarian cancer. This annual family-friendly event is held annually in September, the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, on the Sunday after the Labour day weekend. The Walk is organized by more than 45 communities.

Derek Burney and Fen Hampson will speak about their vision for Canada and its role in the world based on their newly released book Brave New Canada. This is a unique opportunity to hear two of Canada's foremost foreign policy thinkers.

In Brave New Canada, Burney and Hampson identify trends that are reshaping the world's geopolitics and economics and discuss the challenges Canada confronts with the rise of China and other global centres of power. Their examination of a wide range of themes - including the place of pluralistic democratic values in diplomacy, economics, and trade, the ways that Canada should reset relations with its neighbour to the south, as well as how to manage new global security threats - paints a picture of how Canada can become bold, assertive, and confident and easily adjust to a new global landscape.

Arguing that a successful foreign policy cannot be crafted by looking at the world in the rear-view mirror, Brave New Canada offers evidence-based, provocative prescriptions for both the public and private sectors that should stimulate discussion and command widespread attention.

A profound and reflective song writer with a voice often compared to David Bowie, Mahidhara has a heart of tender saintly reflection that will take your kirtan experience to a distinctive level of joyful celebration you will never forget. Mahidhara recently moved to Venables Valley in the interior of BC, so we are truly blessed to have his legendary presence for this festive and musical evening!

NITAI PRIYA
Currently working on her debut album (under a different moniker) being recorded in New Orleans with international jazz superstars from both New Orleans and New York, Nitai Priya has also performed on Broadway with the Harry Connick, Jr. Big Band. Nitai Priya composes all the full instrumentation for the instruments in her jazz orchestras, and she enjoys melding jazz and classical vocals with her mystical and healing approach to spirituality and kirtan. Nitai Priya is also an accomplished metaphysician, healer and vocal coach.

ANAND
Anand David Embry (B. of Music) an experienced group facilitator, studied vocal awareness with Chloe Goodchild of ‘The Naked Voice’ and has been leading kirtan chant in both Vancouver and Victoria for over 25 years. He brings humour, devotion and sincerity to his playing allowing a deep sense of peace and stillness to permeate the group. His classes and workshops take a person into deep listening providing psychoacoustic and spiritual development through sacred chant.

JAI GOPAL
In late 1990s, Jai Gopal discovered Kundalini Yoga and the beautiful chants that come out of the Yogi Bhajan and Sikh tradition. Hearing these profound sound currents encouraged her to expand her singer/songwriter leanings and step into the open-hearted and healing path of devotional chants and mantras. A musician (keyboard, voice, guitar, flute) from an early age, Jai Gopal's music is intuitive, warm and resonates with depth and delight. She offers her nourishing events "Chant Your Heart Open" throughout Vancouver and outlying areas.

Informative, interesting and funny, Great Expectations features beautiful, bizarre, and memorable 20th century maternity garments from the extensive private collection of fashion historian Ivan Sayers.

The show is a fundraiser for the Pacific Post Partum Support Society. An estimated 1 out of every 6 women experiences troubling depression or anxiety after the birth or adoption of a child.

Pacific Post Partum Support Society has been there to support these women and their families for over 40 years.

As a not for profit organization, our Society relies on donations and grants to continue providing its valuable services.

The Scotiabank AIDS WALK for LIFE is looking for volunteers!

On Sunday September 21st, 2014, the Scotiabank AIDS WALK for LIFE is celebrating 29 years of providing hope, promoting life, and spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS.

As one of the largest fundraising events in Western Canada, the Scotiabank AIDS WALK for LIFE raises funds to support those in BC living with HIV, and raises awareness of the challenges they face.

Of course, this annual event wouldn't be possible without the dedication of volunteers like you. If you want to have fun while getting involved with a great cause and supporting your community, then we would love to work with you! Whether you want to be on the front lines or behind the scenes, there’s a role for you. Being a WALK volunteer has many benefits, including:
• A free Scotiabank AIDS WALK for LIFE T-shirt
• A reference letter (upon request) for educational or professional purposes
• A great feeling knowing that you are contributing to a worthy cause!

AIDS WALK Details:
When? Sunday, September 21st, 2014. Registration begins at 10:00 AM and the walk ends at 1:00 PM with entertainment to follow. Depending on the role, volunteer shifts can vary and extend before and after WALK hours.
Where? Sunset Beach (Beach Avenue between Thurlow and Bute)
What? 6.75km walk along the seawall with a shorter 2.2 km walk option available
Why? To raise funds in support of people in BC living with HIV/AIDS

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
• Logistics: Assist with site set up on Saturday, September 20th. Support the Logistics team and complete various tasks under the direction of the Logistics Team Leader during the WALK.
• Parking Attendants: Manage the AIDS WALK Parking lot area and the distribution of parking passes. This role is well suited to those that have a high attention to detail, confident, and able to work well without supervision.
• Photographers: Capture all of the special moments of the event with their own camera and assist with photographing throughout the day. Perfect for those with skills & experience in event or group photography.
• Donation Collectors: Collect donations from the general public at two off-site stations during the WALK. These volunteers may also be asked to collect donations for red carnations and red ribbon balloons. Experience dealing with people and experience in sales will be of help in this position.
• Information Tent: Home to many of our volunteers doing many different jobs including: checking in volunteers, distributing lunch and water, operating the lost and found, coordinating coat check, and helping to keep our site clean and tidy
• Registration Tent: Register all of the teams and individual walkers arriving to participate in the walk on Event Day. Specific skills and experience in financial management, money handling, and customer service are required.
• Route Team: Monitor the route and the water stations, as well as direct pedestrian traffic. Experience and interest in customer service and information giving a plus! Volunteers with First Aid certification or health and safety experience is a great asset.
• Kids Activities: Oversee the kids’ activities table and entertain the WALK’s pint size attendees. Volunteers will be asked to assist with crafts, face-painting, and storytelling.
• Merchandising: Sell T-shirts and other AIDS WALK for LIFE memorabilia.
• Cheerleaders: Cheer on participants as they do the WALK, and get them pumped up about the event! A cheerful and energetic personality is a must. Cheerleaders will also be asked to create their own enthusiastic signs for the WALK.
• Setup/Teardown: Responsible for setting the event up and then tearing it all down once it’s all over! Volunteers will be required to lift and carry things like tables, fences, and tents. Volunteers are able to sign up for setup, teardown, or both.
• Office Assistance This special group of people offer their time in the day or evening (special office nights are also planned) with database input, phone calls, mailings, registration package assembly, and computer work (Access, Word and Excel used in the office).
